How to remove an object from a video

There are two ways to take something out of a shot and four ways to make it stop mattering. The two removals are the expensive ones, and they are not always the ones that look best.

A microphone in the top of frame. A brand on a mug. A stranger who walked through the back of your shot. The footage is otherwise good, which is exactly why the object is unbearable.

Removal comes in two forms here, and the difference between them is whether the thing moves.

Two erasers

The brush: free, exact, and static

The eraser is a painted mask. Stroke over a region and it becomes transparent, revealing whatever is on the lanes beneath — brush size and softness control the stroke, a restore brush paints back anything you overshoot, and the matte is stored on the clip so preview and export apply it identically, soft edges included. Reopen it later and the mask loads ready to extend.

It costs nothing and it does not track. That combination makes it excellent for the fixed furniture of a frame — a logo bug, a light stand at the edge, a bright window — and useless for a person walking.

Because it makes pixels transparent rather than filling them in, it needs something behind it. Put a clean plate of the same scene on the lane beneath and the removal disappears completely. With nothing beneath, you get a hole.

The AI eraser: it tracks, and it fills

For anything that moves, name the thing you want gone and the AI eraser takes it out across the shot, rebuilding the background behind it. No plate required — inventing the background is the job it does. It runs as a generation, so unlike the brush it costs tokens, quoted before you run.

What it does well: a discrete object against a background that has an obvious continuation. A ball on grass, a sign on a wall, a person against foliage.

Where it struggles is worth knowing before you spend anything:

  • Backgrounds with structure that must line up — tiled floors, brickwork, text, a horizon through a window frame. A rebuilt straight line that bends is more distracting than the object was.
  • Objects that touch the subject. Removing something held in a hand tends to take a finger with it.
  • Shadows and reflections. These are part of the object and frequently survive it. A removed lamp whose shadow still falls across the wall reads as haunted.
  • Long shots. Errors accumulate; a rebuilt patch that wanders across ten seconds draws exactly the eye you were trying to spare.

Test on a short section first. It is a generation billed by length, and a two-second trial tells you the same thing as a full run.

Four ways to make it stop mattering

Professional edits are full of problems that were never removed, only defeated. Try these first — three of the four are free.

Crop it out. If the object is near an edge, crop or reframe and it is gone with no artefacts at all. This is the answer far more often than people expect, especially for vertical deliveries where you are discarding most of the width anyway.

Cover it. Put something over it: a PiP overlay, a title, a b-roll insert for the two seconds it is visible. Editors do this constantly and nobody notices.

Blur it. For a face, a licence plate or a screen full of private data, blurring is not a compromise — it is the expected treatment. A blur region or mask is free, immediate, and there is no matte to fail.

Cut around it. The problem is often five seconds long inside a forty-second shot. Cut to another angle, or to b-roll, and cut back. This is an edit, not a repair, and it usually improves the pacing.

When the removal has to be invisible

If the shot genuinely cannot survive the object, stack the tools rather than asking one to be perfect:

  1. Key or brush out the easy part, whatever sits against a flat area.
  2. Give the AI eraser the small, hard remainder rather than the whole frame.
  3. Grade the patch. A rebuilt region is frequently a touch flatter or cooler than its surroundings; a small local correction closes the gap.
  4. Watch it at full size, at speed, twice. Frame-by-frame inspection finds problems nobody watching will ever see, and misses the flicker that everyone notices.

About watermarks

The tools do not care what the pixels are, but you should. Removing a watermark from footage you own or licensed — your own old logo, a client's superseded brand — is ordinary housekeeping. Removing one from someone else's stock clip or film to reuse it is a licensing problem no editor solves, and a visible logo is not the part that gets you into trouble.

The order that works

  1. Ask whether a crop, a cover, a blur or a cut solves it for free. Usually one does.
  2. Static object, plate available: brush it out. No tokens.
  3. Moving object: AI eraser, tested on two seconds first.
  4. Hard case: split the job — brush the easy region, generate only the remainder.
  5. Grade the repair into its surroundings.
  6. Watch it at full size and at speed before you export.
