How to remove a video background without a green screen
You shot at your desk, not in front of a green wall. There are three ways to lift the subject off that background, they cost wildly different amounts, and the right one is decided by the footage rather than by preference.
Nobody shoots the footage they later need. You filmed at a desk, in a hotel room, on a street — and now the subject needs to be over something else, and there is no green wall anywhere in the shot.
That is a solvable problem, and it has three solutions with very different price tags.
Pick the tool from the footage, not from habit
- Any large uniform colour in the frame — green wall, blue sheet, flat white cyclorama: chroma key. Free, instant, and you can tune it while watching the composite.
- A cluttered background with a moving subject: AI background removal. Every frame is matted, the clip comes back as transparent WebM, and it costs tokens by the second of footage.
- A fixed region rather than a subject — a window, a doorway, a logo plate: the painted eraser. Free, and it does not track motion.
Most real jobs use two of the three. Key the wall, then erase the light stand that pokes into the corner.
If there is uniform colour, key it first
The keyer removes one colour and makes it transparent, so whatever sits on the lane beneath becomes the new background. Sample the actual backdrop with the picker rather than trusting the default green, raise similarity until the wall is gone, then back off the moment the subject starts eroding. Spill suppression takes the colour cast off hair and shoulders.
Two things worth knowing: even lighting on the backdrop matters far more than what the backdrop is made of — wrinkles and shadows are what break keys, not fabric — and the preview runs the exact keying maths the export uses, so what you tune is what renders. Nothing here costs tokens, which makes it always worth trying before you pay a model to do the same job.
Otherwise, let a model cut the matte
Background removal does not care what is behind the subject. Stills come back as transparent PNGs, clips as VP9 WebM with an alpha channel, and both drop onto a lane as overlays. There are several modes — a light fast pass for drafts, portrait and fine-matting modes built for hair and soft edges, product-grade options for stills.
Video is billed by the second of source footage, with the price quoted before you confirm. So do not run ninety seconds to find out whether the mode was right: split off a two-second slice at the hardest moment in the shot — the fast hand movement, the messy hair, the place where subject and background are the same brightness — and run that. If the matte survives the worst two seconds it will survive the rest.
For a fixed region, paint it out
The eraser is a brush, not a model: stroke over an area and it goes transparent, revealing the lanes underneath. It is free and exact, and it does not follow anything that moves. That makes it the right tool for the static furniture of a frame and the wrong tool for a person.
What actually breaks a cutout
No separation. If the subject and the background sit at the same brightness and colour, every method struggles — a model has nothing to find an edge with. A step to one side, or a lamp moved before you shoot, is worth an hour of matte cleanup afterwards.
Motion blur. A hand swept across frame is semi-transparent for real optical reasons, and matting it frame by frame produces edges that flicker. Slower movement, or a shorter shutter if you still control the shoot.
Fine and soft edges. Loose hair, fur, knitwear: this is exactly what the portrait and matting modes exist for. The fast draft mode will chew them.
Genuinely transparent things. Glass, smoke, water, a veil. There is no correct matte for a pixel that is half background — expect to compose around them rather than through them.
The cutout is half the job
A subject floating on nothing looks worse than the original. What sells a composite is the plate behind it and the match between the two.
Drop the new background on the lane beneath — footage, a still, or a generated scene. Then close the gap:
- Match the light direction. A subject lit from the left in front of a plate lit from the right never resolves, no matter how good the edge is.
- Match the colour temperature. A quick grade on the subject towards the plate does more for believability than any matte refinement.
- Give the plate some blur. Real backgrounds at that distance are soft. A sharp plate behind a sharp subject reads as a sticker.
- Check the edge at 100%. Scrub the clip, watch the boundary, and look for the halo of old background colour that says the similarity was pushed too far.
When not to remove the background at all
Removal is not the only answer, and it is often not the cheapest:
- You only want to hide something — a face, a plate, a whiteboard. Blur or mask it: free, instant, no matte to go wrong.
- The background is fine, just busy. Crop tighter and the problem leaves the frame.
- The subject is small in frame. No cutout of a distant figure looks good composited. Reframe, reshoot, or generate the shot you actually wanted.
The order that works
- Look for uniform colour and key it — free, exact, no tokens.
- Otherwise test a two-second slice with AI matting before running the whole clip.
- Use the eraser for static leftovers, not for people.
- Put the plate on the lane beneath, and match light, colour and softness.
- Scrub the edge at full size before you call it done.
- Ask whether blur, a crop or a reframe solves it for free instead.
