Timeline basics: trim, split & arrange

The timeline has as many lanes as the edit needs. Clips trim and split non-destructively, gaps behave predictably, and everything is undoable.

  1. Move and trim Drag a clip to move it. Audio clips trim by dragging their left or right edge; a video clip stretches to a new speed instead, so shorten it with Split and delete. Magnetic snapping pulls edges to neighbours and to the playhead, and the Snap button turns it off when you need free placement.
  2. Split at the playhead Park the needle where you want the cut and press Split. Each half keeps its own effects and can be trimmed or moved on its own, and split halves can be re-merged later, even out of order.
  3. Delete and close gaps Delete removes a clip and pulls everything after it left, so no hole is left behind. A hole appears when you drag a clip right or use Insert gap: park the playhead in it and press Close gap to take it back out.
  4. Select more than one clip Shift-click or drag a marquee to multi-select, then move or delete the set together. Arrow keys nudge selected clips frame by frame.
  5. Zoom and navigate Pinch or Ctrl+scroll zooms around the cursor; the +/- controls zoom around the playhead. Click the ruler to jump the needle anywhere.
  6. Undo everything Cmd/Ctrl+Z steps back through every change, including deletions, so a deleted clip is always recoverable.

Tips

  • Clicking between clips is instant for recently shown footage, because the preview keeps recent sources warm.
  • Speed, reverse and freeze-frame live in the clip inspector's Timing and Actions tabs.
  • Link a video clip with its audio (or split them apart) to edit picture and sound together or separately.
